Goal Seek command bar

Goal Seek Options

Displays the Goal Seek Options dialog box, where you can specify the maximum time and maximum iterations the command should run before it ends. This may also limit the number of solutions that can be found. To let the command run longer, adjust the default settings on this dialog box. To learn more, see the section, Controlling Goal Seeking Attempts.

Note:

After the Goal Seek command runs, the status bar shows the duration and the number of iterations that it took to complete. This information is useful when you make adjustments on the goal Seek Options dialog box.

Example: Total Time Elapsed (secs): 0.39000 seconds; Number of Iterations: 23.

Goal

Specifies the initial variable whose value you want to calculate or modify by selecting a formula-driven variable directly from the Variable Table. You can choose a variable from the list on the command bar, or you can use the Click Goal Variable button to identify the variable graphically.

Note:

  • Only driven variables and dimensions can be selected as the goal variable. The value of a driven variable or dimension is controlled by the element it refers to, or by a formula or variable you define.

  • The value of the Goal variable must depend upon the variable or dimension selected as the Variable to change, or goal seeking will fail.

Click Goal Variable

Specifies a goal variable by selecting it graphically in the active window. Click this button and then click a variable or a dimension in the active window to retrieve its corresponding value or variable.

Current

Displays the initial value of the goal variable or goal dimension, prior to the seek operation.

Target

Specify the desired value for the goal variable or goal dimension by typing a value in the box and pressing Enter. The units are entered automatically and must match those of the goal variable.

Variable

Specifies a variable whose value is to be changed by the seek operation. This, in turn, alters the initial value of the goal variable or goal dimension. You can choose a variable from the Variable Table list on the command bar, or you can use the Click Change Variable button to identify the variable graphically.

Note:

  • Only driving variables and dimensions can be selected as the change variable. The value of a driving variable or dimension controls the size, orientation, or location of an element.

  • The value of the Goal variable must depend upon the variable or dimension selected as the Variable to change, or goal seeking will fail.

Click Change Variable

Specifies the variable to be changed by selecting it graphically in the active window. Click this button and then click a variable or a dimension in the active window to retrieve its corresponding value or variable.

Deselect (x)

Discards all input and restarts the command.

Accept (check mark)

Accepts the currently selected inputs and then runs the seek operation.
